Overview
Sintered Properties
Sintered properties were determined using test specimens that were sintered for 45 minutes in dissociated ammonia with a -40°F dew point.

Resistance to Oxidation

Type 410 resists oxidation at temperatures up to 1500°F. For continuous service, the temperature should not exceed 1200°F to 1300°F. Since the rate of oxidation is greatly affected by the atmosphere present and by the operating conditions, by the heating and cooling cycles, and by the structural design, no actual data can be presented which would apply to all service conditions.

Heat Treating
In the annealed condition, 410 consists of ferrite and carbides. Austenite forms in increasing amounts as the steel is heated above approximately 1450°F, and rapid cooling from above 1450°F produces a partially or totally martensitic structure, depending upon the quenching temperature and the analysis. A totally martensitic structure, or very nearly so, may be produced by oil quenching from 1800°F, or by air cooling if the section is light.
